Location
Spread throughout a large expanse of forest on the outskirts of a small village in Sri Lanka, The Mudhouse is a private and seductive jungle lodge, far away from the beaten track. Flanked by lakes and blessed with abundant birdlife, wildlife and natural beauty,
Rooms
The Mudhouse offers a range of rustic accommodation in private and individually designed huts. The Mudhouse consists of five totally unique accommodation units spread throughout a large expanse of forest. The huts are constructed with natural materials, using ancient techniques with a distinctly modern twist. Whilst all the individual layouts and details differ, the experience of staying in any of them is essentially the same. All huts have outdoor jungle showers, indoor bathrooms, dining & lounge areas and relaxation spaces adorned with hammocks and beanbags – all designed in a style that befits the overall aesthetic and ‘back-to-nature’ theme. There is no mains electricity in the guest huts. Instead, lighting at night is provided by plentiful candles, lanterns and solar powered lighting. The Mudhouse is a spirited and fun place to get away from it all. That could be days out exploring or weeks lost reading books in hammocks; both are encouraged.
Included Activities
Serving traditional, healthy meals and providing a range of local excursions and activities, The Mudhouse offers a unique chance to experience rural Sri Lankan life in all its colourful splendor. The Mudhouse offers a varied range of local excursions activities, all included in the price. These can be arranged locally and do not need to be pre-booked, so you can really play it by ear and go with your own flow. All guests are given bicycles to use to get around the property and huts are equipped with binoculars and wildlife books. Local transport options are also available if you like the idea of exploring by tractor or tuk-tuk. Packed breakfasts and lunches can be arranged if required.
Sustainability
Run with environmental sustainability as its core focus, The Mudhouse aims to be a positive force for the people and nature with whom we co-exist. Since its inception in 2005, The Mudhouse has been run with a strong dedication towards sustainability. Long before it was considered a duty of hotels, The Mudhouse was already experimenting with different models of community based and environmentally focused tourism. This was a big part of the motivation to start The Mudhouse in the first place. Put simply, the vision is to create a model of tourism that is win-win-win. It should be beneficial to the natural environment, beneficial to their local community and, crucially, beneficial to the guests.
