Elinor Eaglestone

Creative Writing Executive

I was born in Hong Kong and lived there until I was ten years old. Growing up surrounded by people from different countries and cultures left a lasting impression on me and sparked my interest in travelling, an interest which was nurtured by my parents being avid travellers and our relocation across the world to the UK. The differences between Hong Kong and the UK gave me a big culture shock that only made my interest in other countries more pronounced. This fondness for learning about other places helps me when I write articles as I always thoroughly enjoy researching the different locations I write about.

The two things that I do most in my spare time is reading and writing. I use reading as a way to travel without travelling; Getting lost in a book is like exploring a foreign city. I also love writing – mainly fiction. I have always been an avid writer, forever scribbling stories in notebooks, and this love has grown from just writing parts of stories to working on a full novel.

I also now have an interest in writing non-fiction article-style pieces because of this job. My passion for writing is taking me to university in September to study English with Creative Writing. My dream is to become a published author but for now I can be found lost in fantasy worlds, either with my nose in a book or working on my novel, and usually in the company of my cat.

What is the most beautiful place you’ve ever been to?

Scandinavia takes my breath away every time I go. I’ve been lucky enough to go skiing in Sweden and Norway (right on the border) most years since I was five and I never get tired of seeing everything covered in a blanket of snow. Sometimes the snow crystals floating in the air will catch the sun and it looks like the sky is glittering.

What’s your favourite culinary memory from your travels?

Growing up I was a very picky eater but I could always rely on desserts. One of my family’s frequent destinations was Thailand so I became well-acquainted with a selection of Thai desserts usually involving coconut, lychee, or mango. My all-time favourite Thai dessert I’ve had was Pandan leaves stuffed with grated coconut.
