Booking a superior suite will give guests the choice between the Banyan Suite and the Tamarind Suite. An open and airy place to dine, Ehala Restaurant is a vast dining hall that is able to host up to 320 guests at one time and features live action encounters where food is prepared in view of those dining at the restaurant. Serving buffet food all day, snacks are available in between each meal.

Open for dinner, The Lotus offers authentic Sri Lankan cuisine as well as a variety of organic options. Between the hours of 7pm and 11pm, food is served from the local on-site garden and guests even have the opportunity to pick vegetables for themselves. Named after the elephants in the neighbouring national parks, Tuskers is a lounge bar that lets guests unwind as the day comes to an end. Cocktails and snacks are both available at this semi-open location.

The veranda is the perfect setting to admire the poolside view as it reflects onto the walls in the lounge. Also a sports bar, cocktails and snacks are available. Open from 7am to 11pm, guests can unwind to the sound of chirping birds and monkeys swinging from branch to branch outside.

The resort is home to its very own spa which is housed in its own two-storey building. It welcomes guests with a serene garden and warm drink and as guests absorb the atmosphere, the team will introduce them to the treatment room. Full body massages and relaxing massage scrubs are on offer as are wraps, manicures and pedicures.

The wellness centre is also home to its own sauna and steam room to ease into it. For those who wish to take care of their body with light activity, yoga sessions are available where guests can practice an asana in the garden area in the early mornings.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sam Popham’s Arboretum invites guests back to an era of beautiful architecture and art to admire at the Archaeological Museum. Witness bronze statues, ancient medical instruments and a topographical model of what the city once looked like. Guests can then head to the palace built by King Parakramabahu. Taking a trip to the neighbouring village is a chance to witness the local life of Sri Lanka. Visitors can also take a catamaran ride into the reservoir after a long day of walking around the village and glide through the still water, seeing lotus plants and abundant foliage.

Whenever possible the lodge seeks to source produce and talent locally from the surrounding communities as it enables the lodge to directly contribute to community development. A significant proportion of fresh produce is sourced locally and this eliminates additional air miles from imported food as well as reduces the amount of packaging that is needed and ultimately wasted. The lodge also has an on-site garden to provide the kitchens with vegetable and herbs.

Transparent and fair processes are in place with stringent guidelines ensuring that suppliers are socially and environmentally responsible. The Cinnamon hotels chain reported that there was no negative social or environmental impacts in their supply chain throughout the entire year.

At least 60% of raw materials are sourced locally, consisting mainly of food and beverages. The lodge strives to use environmentally sustainable products wherever possible in line with their ethos of responsible consumption. The lodge also encourages guests to use resources responsibly to reduce waste. Several initiatives are carried out every year to raise awareness on reducing food waste and plastic consumption.

Cinnamon Hotels have launched an initiative that is in place in all of their resorts across Sri Lanka and Maldives to reduce plastic consumption. The aim is to eventually eliminate all single-use plastics with environmentally friendly alternatives.

Alongside supporting local suppliers of the surrounding areas, the property also nurtures a meaningful relationship with the community as the lodge depends on the community in many ways. Engaging with the community is a part of the company’s agenda and there are many developments to support them in place. The Cinnamon Youth Empowerment programme is an initiative to facilitate skills development and enhance livelihood opportunities and employability opportunities.

This impacts over 1,000 youth each year and the company carries out internships and IT programmes as a part of this. Cinnamon Hotels also contributes to community with local employment and community initiatives. Health is a commitment to the hotel and they raise awareness on a number of health issues such as HIV AIDS and the company actively engage the community in initiatives that better the environment so that it is preserves for future generations.

A state-of-the-art waste management system has been installed and enables the resort to segregate, recycle and responsibly dispose of waste in an eco-friendly manner. Wet waste is used to generate energy while the remainder is sent to local piggeries. Recyclable material from dry waste is sent to recycle centres certified by the Central Environment Authority and garden waste is used to make eco-friendly fertilisers.

The lodge also has an in-house paper recycling plant to utilise waste paper generated from hotel operations and elephant dung to produce recycled paper. The project is moving into its second phase with women from the local community participating.

Cinnamon Hotels’ policy seeks to optimise and conserve the use of water obtained from both ground water and surface sources. Waste water is reused after treatment whenever possible to reduce the intake of fresh water and every one of their resorts actively engages in recycling water being used for gardening and washing requirements of the respective properties.

Project Leopard is an on-going project with dual objectives of supporting the livelihoods of cattle farmers and protects the leopard population living in and outside the boundary of the parks in Sri Lanka. 50 steel pens have already been distributed to cattle farmed to protect the cattle from leopards in the area.

A collaboration between Cinnamon Hotels and the Centre for Conservation and Research formed the Cinnamon Elephant project. This initiative is ground breaking, developing the best practices in elephant tourism. The aim is to gather data that can help to understand the Human-Elephant conflict in the North Central Provence.

The research collects data on behavioural patterns, demographics and the health status of elephants to predict their movements to better manage their land. The information is then shared with visitors while on safari to create a more informed experience of these beautiful creatures.

Protecting the biodiversity of the surrounding area is of upmost importance to the lodge. The launch of nature trails and expert naturalists passing on their knowledge to guests and staff is one of the ways that the company promote preserving nature for future generations.
